Also known as Hepsera, Adefovir dipivoxil is an oral prodrug indicated for the treatment of chronic hepatitis B in adults. People with chronic hepatitis B usually need treatment to stop or to reduce the activity of the virus. This, of course, limits damage to the liver, which is a complication of the infection. You may, however, need to be tested for HIV before you start taking this medication. Besides, Adefovir dipivoxil can harm your kidneys, especially if you already have kidney problems or take certain medicines. Therefore, you must tell your doctor if you have a problem with the way your kidneys work. Bear in mind that severe acute exacerbations of hepatitis may occur in patients who discontinue Adefovir dipivoxil. Additionally, chronic use of this medication may result in upper right abdomen or stomach pain in patients at risk of or having underlying renal dysfunction. As for the common side effects, they include dark urine, general tiredness or weakness, nausea, vomiting, and yellow eyes and skin. Remember that you must avoid getting pregnant while you are taking Adefovir. So, make sure you have discussed with your doctor which types of contraception are suitable for you. When it comes to the usual dose of this drug, it is one 10 mg tablet daily, taken either with or without food.
