Also known by its brand name Giotrif, Afatinib is a cancer treatment drug. As stated on Wikipedia.com, this drug is mainly indicated for the treatment of non-small cell lung carcinoma (NSCLC). According to the same website, there is also emerging evidence to support Afatinib’s use in other cancers such as breast cancer. Bear in mind that the following side effects are considered common among the patients who have used Afatinib: diarrhea, mouth sores, Paronychia, and dry mouth. There are, however, other side effects that are thankfully less common than the previously mentioned ones, including itching, weight loss, nose bleeds, cystitis, low potassium, and runny nose. Bear in mind that shortness of breath and chest pain are yet other side effects that particularly require immediate medical care. So, don’t hesitate to call your doctor when you experience them. Also remember that Afatinib may be hazardous to the fetus. Therefore, you must inform your doctor if you are pregnant prior to starting this treatment. On a side note, you should take Afatinib once a day on an empty stomach, at least one hour before your meal or three hours after it.
