Patented in 1974, Acyclovir is an antiviral drug indicated for the treatment of herpes simplex virus infections, chickenpox, and zoster (shingles) in adults with normal immune system. When it comes to treating herpes simplex virus infections, Acyclovir works by hindering the spread of the herpes virus in the body. It’s true that this medication is not particularly the cure that will make herpes simplex virus infections go away, yet it “may help the sores to heal faster and relieve some of the pain and discomfort” (drugs.com). According to the same source, “the presence of other medical problems may affect the use of Acyclovir” such as an allergy to milk protein concentrate or a weak immune system. So, don’t forget to tell your doctor if you have any of these medical problems before taking the medication in question. Bear in mind that nausea and diarrhea are very common side effects that usually occur after taking Acyclovir. This drug may also cause other side effects that are rather serious such as kidney problems and low platelets. It is worth noting that those with poor liver or kidney function require greater care when given this drug. Fortunately, though, Acyclovir appears to be safe during pregnancy and breastfeeding. On a side note, you can take this drug with meals or on an empty stomach.
