Made in 1961, Amiodarone is an antiarrhythmic medication used to treat and prevent certain types of irregular heartbeats. Like other antiarrhythmic drugs, Amiodarone works primarily by blocking potassium rectifier currents that are responsible for the repolarization of the heart during phase 3 of the cardiac action potential. Besides, it works partly by increasing the time before a heart cell can contract again. It is worth noting that Amiodarone has a number of side effects that should be taken into consideration before using it. These side effects include feeling tired, tremor, nausea, and constipation. As for Amiodarone’s serious side effects, they include lung toxicity, liver problems, heart arrhythmias, vision problems, thyroid problems, and even death.
