Discovered in 1960, amitriptyline is a medicine primarily used to treat a number of mental illnesses, including major depressive disorder and anxiety disorders, and less commonly attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and bipolar disorder. It can also be used to prevent migraines, treat neuropathic pain such as fibromyalgia and postherpetic neuralgia, and less commonly insomnia. Amitriptyline is thought to work by increasing a chemical called serotonin in the brain – A process that can improve your mood. It can also change the way that your nerves receive pain signals, so pain goes away. When it comes to its side effects, Amitriptyline can cause blurred vision, dry mouth, low blood pressure on standing, sleepiness and constipation. Plus, it has more serious side effects, such as seizures, an increased risk of suicide in those less than 25 years of age, urinary retention, glaucoma, and a number of heart issues. It is worth noting that Amitriptyline is generally not recommended in pregnancy or while breastfeeding. Besides, your doctor will only prescribe this drug for your pain while you're pregnant or breastfeeding if the benefits of taking the medicine outweigh the risks
