Approved for medical use in the United States in 2004 and sold under the brand name Kivexa, Abacavir/lamivudine is a fixed dose combination of abacavir and lamivudine, and it is used to treat HIV/AIDS. Even though this medication does not cure HIV, it still helps keep it from reproducing, and appears to slow down the destruction of the immune system. Of course, this may help delay the development of serious health problems usually related to AIDS or HIV infection. However, the medication’s common side effects include trouble sleeping, headache, depression, feeling tired, nausea, rash, and fever. As for its serious side effects, they may include high blood lactate levels, allergic reactions, and enlargement of the liver.
