Ampicillin/sulbactam is a combination of ampicillin (a common penicillin-derived antibiotic) and sulbactam, which in turn is an inhibitor of bacterial beta-lactamase. There are actually two different forms of this drug – The first form was developed in 1987, and the second one is called sultamicillin. It is worth noting that Ampicillin/sulbactam has a wide array of medical uses for many different types of infectious disease.Technically, Sulbactam blocks the enzyme which breaks down ampicillin, and thereby allows ampicillin to attack and kill the bacteria. Bear in mind that the recommended adult dose of this medication is 1.5 grams, although in pediatric patients, the dose is mainly based on body weight. However, in patients with decreased kidney function, the dosing frequency may need to be reduced. As for the common side effects of Ampicillin/Sulbactam, they include redness, tenderness, and soreness of the skin at the injection site. Less frequent side effects to this medication include chest pain, fatigue, seizure, headache, painful urination, urinary retention, intestinal gas, nausea, vomiting, itching, hairy tongue, tightness in throat, reddening of the skin, nose bleeding, and facial swelling. On a side note, Ampicillin-sulbactam appears safe and effective for use during pregnancy and lactation when indicated.
