Introduced in the market in the 1990s, Acarbose is an anti-diabetic drug used to treat diabetes mellitus type 2 by preventing the digestion of complex carbohydrates. Technically, this medication inhibits enzymes needed to digest carbohydrates, specifically, alpha-glucosidase enzymes in the brush border of the small intestines, and pancreatic alpha-amylase. Naturally, inhibition of these enzyme systems reduces the rate of digestion of complex carbohydrates. Bear in mind that the drug should be taken at the start of main meals, considering it prevents the digestion of complex carbohydrates. Besides, if you want to spare yourself the trouble of dealing with side effects such as flatulence and diarrhea, it is generally advised to start with a low dose and gradually increase the dose to the desired amount.
